The Tennis Ball Problem

چکیده
Our object is to explore "the s-tennis ball problem" (at each turn s balls are available and we play with one ball at a time). This is a natural generalization of the case s = 2 considered by Mallows and Shapiro. We show how this generalization is connected with s-ary trees and employ the notion of generating trees to obtain a solution expressed in terms of generating functions. Then, we present a variation in which at each turn we have 4 balls and play with 2 balls at a time. To solve this problem we use the concepts of Riordan Arrays and stretched Riordan Arrays, and a generalization of generating trees. This is a joint work with 1. Introduction Let 1 t < s be two integer numbers. A tennis player begins a match with 0 ball in the pocket.

Background. Kinanthropometric and Kinematic variable are important in the understanding of performance in various sports. These variables have not been explored among Tennis players in Nigeria. Objectives. An exploration to establish a regression model for kinanthropometric and kinematic variables in relation to ball velocity of Nigerian Female Tennis Players. Methods. Data were collected thr...
متن کاملA 41 Integers 11 ( 2011 ) on the Tennis Ball Problem
We generalize the original tennis ball problem to the case in which the number of balls received and the number of balls discarded can vary from move to move, and derive formulas solving the problem in that case. We then use these formulas to obtain new and simpler proofs of the relation between the solution to the original tennis ball problem and the Catalan numbers, as well as a considerably ...
متن کاملBall Tracking for Tennis Video Annotation
Tennis game annotation using broadcast video is a task with a wide range of applications. In particular, ball trajectories carry rich semantic information for the annotation. However, tracking a ball in broadcast tennis video is extremely challenging. In this chapter, we explicitly address the challenges, and propose a layered data association algorithm for trackingmultiple tennis balls fully a...
متن کاملBounce of a spinning ball near normal incidence
A spinning ball incident at right angles to a surface bounces at an oblique angle and with reduced spin. Consequently, a spinning ball struck head-on does not rebound along its incident path, which presents a control problem in bat and racquet sports. The rebound angle and spin depend in a nontrivial manner on the coefficient of friction between the ball and the surface and on the elastic prope...
متن کاملTraining Level Does Not Affect Auditory Perception of The Magnitude of Ball Spin in Table Tennis
Identifying the trajectory and spin of the ball with speed and accuracy is critical for good performance in table tennis. The aim of this study was to analyze the ability of table tennis players presenting different levels of training/experience to identify the magnitude of the ball spin from the sound produced when the racket hit the ball. Four types of "forehand" contact sounds were collected...
متن کاملProof of a Lattice Paths Conjecture Connected to the Tennis Ball Problem
The authors give a history of the so-called tennis ball problem, and discuss its relation to lattice path enumeration. We also prove a conjecture related to a solution of the symmetric case, namely when the number of balls removed each turn is exactly half the number inserted.
